Complete SharePoint High Availability Protection

Protecting SharePoint Multi-Tier Architecture

Increasingly, SharePoint implementations are considered critical applications where downtime can cause significant business disruptions and productivity losses. Protecting SharePoint is made more difficult by its complex implementation architecture.

SharePoint implementations follow a three-tier architectural model with a front-end Web server based on Internet Information Services (IIS), a middle-tier application server based on SharePoint Server roles and a back-end database server based on SQL Server. Each of these tiers must be protected from unplanned hardware, software and operator errors. Each tier must also be protected from planned downtime resulting from reconfiguration, hardware upgrades, hot fixes and service packs. They must be protected from data loss or corruption, and from site failures or disasters as well. Microsoft's solution for local protection requires a six-server SharePoint farm that still leaves the indexing role unprotected. Disaster protection requires a separate solution.

A Better High Availability Alternative Than SharePoint Failover

Marathon's everRun software is a proven alternative that provides complete SharePoint high availability. everRun simply and reliably protects all elements of the three tiers, the front-end IIS Web server, the SharePoint application server and the back-end SQL database server - including the indexing service.

everRun is a great choice for protecting Microsoft SharePoint high availability and related database applications:

  • Higher levels of availability than competing failover solutions
  • Selectable fault-tolerance using a range of everRun products along with the "availability dial" of everRun VM
  • Simple to install and manage with no need for specialized staff experience or training
  • Solutions for both virtual and physical environments
  • Solutions for local, near distance and long distance availability and data protection
  • Choice of either locally-attached or networked storage
  • Built-in failover policy eliminates complex policy definition and the potential for policy errors
  • Sophisticated error detection is faster and more reliable than simple failover heartbeats
  • Cost effective for a wide range of SharePoint environments
  • Protection for the indexing role that cannot be operated redundantly

Diagram 1 shows the IIS Web server, SQL Server database and SharePoint application roles each implemented as separate virtual machines in an everRun VM environment. Each virtual machine can be matched to its appropriate protection level. For example, System Fault-Tolerance can fully protect the indexing role including its in-memory state. Full protection is achieved using as few as two servers, versus six servers required for a SharePoint farm.

Diagram 2 shows SharePoint in a disaster recovery scenario using everRun DR across two extended distance sites. everRun VM is used for local availability protection as well as to simplify management and reduce cost of the disaster recovery solution. Data is replicated across the two sites in real time using everRun DR. SQL Server, SharePoint application roles, and IIS failover are also managed by everRun DR.
