Survey Reveals Many Businesses Now Require 'Always On' Availability for More than half of their Windows Server Applications

Marathon Technologies’ Windows Server 2008 HA Toolkit Details Best Practices to Achieve ‘Always On’ High Availability

Littleton, Mass. — September 28, 2009 — Top level findings revealed today by a Marathon Technologies global survey show that the need for ‘Always On’ high availability for Microsoft® Windows Server® applications has increased dramatically. About half of the IT professionals who responded to the survey reported that 50 per cent or more of their Windows Server applications now require ‘always on’ availability. Microsoft SQL Server and Exchange Server were cited as the two most important Windows Server applications that require ‘always on’ availability. The data derives from surveys Marathon conducted with their global network of customers, prospects and channel partners in July - September 2009.

More than 20 percent of survey participants reported that 76 -100 percent of their Windows Server applications require ‘always on’ availability. An additional 28 percent of respondents stated that 51 - 75 percent of their Windows Server applications require ‘always on’ availability or continuous uptime.

The survey found that more than 70 percent of participants revealed that the number of Windows Server applications that require high availability has increased significantly in the past two years. 76 per cent of the respondents reported that downtime to Microsoft SQL Server and Exchange Server caused the most disruption and were the most important applications that required high availability protection. The survey also revealed that approximately 60 percent of survey participants have either already upgraded to Windows Server 2008 or plan to within the next year.

As a result of these key findings, Marathon has developed a set of high availability planning and implementation tools designed for companies upgrading or implementing Windows 2008. The white paper, on-demand webinar and FAQs in the Windows Server 2008 toolkit explain why companies should consider upgrading to Windows 2008 now and best practice recommendations for affordable, ‘always on’ high availability.

The survey pooled a global network of Marathon’s customers, partners and prospects and was conducted in July - September 2009. More than 100 companies participated in the survey. 48 percent of the respondents worked for midmarket organizations and 43 percent worked for large to Fortune 500 companies.
